SPOTLIGHT
Debrha Petruzzi is a Safety Steward for TLCBD’s Safe Passage program and she’s living her best life by “helping the community by building trust”.
Debrha was born in the Tenderloin, though her family moved to San Mateo when she was 3 years old. She spent her 20s as a San Francisco street artist and also lived in El Paso, New Mexico. In her 40s, she worked as a real estate agent, married, and had two children. During a visit with her brother in 2019, she learned more about his work with Safe Passage and decided to volunteer two days a week. Debrha was instantly hooked.
She moved back to the Bay Area in 2025 and now lives in North Berkeley. After such a great volunteer experience, Debrha applied to become a Safety Steward and was hired in March 2026.
Debrha loves helping her community and making it safe. A couple of months ago, a parent recognized her and asked for help getting a child’s foot unstuck from an exposed pipe on the ground. Moments like that reflect the trust and relationships she has built with community members, parents, and families. “It was gratifying to be known as someone who will be willing to help,” she recalls.
Debrha is living her best life. You might see her at a corner along the Safe Passage route, at Elm Alley helping students from Tenderloin Community School, or at Kim Tar, her favorite place to eat in the TL. Wherever you see her, you’ll find her ready to help.
The Clean Operations Swing Shift keeps the Tenderloin’s busiest corridors cleaner, safer, and more welcoming. Operating Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the team provides targeted cleaning, power washing, and maintenance across more than 30 blocks each week, focusing on small business corridors and Safe Passage routes during peak activity hours.
