TENDERLOIN TLC: 300-STRONG CIVIC JOY TRASH PICK-UP TRANSFORMS SAN FRANCISCO’S STREETS

San Francisco, CA – Littering on the streets of San Francisco is one of the City’s major issues and is exacerbating the City’s already sluggish economic recovery following the pandemic.
The Tenderloin, in particular, has grappled with a disproportionate share of trash-related issues, negatively impacting the quality of life for residents and the survival of local small businesses.
In response to these challenges, the Civic Joy Fund, Refuse Refuse, the Tenderloin CBD (TLCBD), and Tenderloin Business Coalition are partnering to organize a massive Tenderloin trash pick-up on Saturday, Jan 6th, 2024.
The Tenderloin TLC Trash Pick-Up will meet at Alfred E Boeddeker Park at 10 AM and will be one of the largest trash pick-up events in the history of the City.
What started as a series of weekly disco trash pick-ups, drawing 50-120 participants each week, turned into Civic Joy Fund’s Clean Up the City, a partnership with RefuseRefuse, with ten trash pick-ups every weekend. This will result in over 5,000 bags of trash that will be collected by the end of this year through these pickups, according to Vincent Yuen of RefuseRefuse. “These events have not only cleansed the city but also cultivated a sense of community and camaraderie.”
Yuen says, “ No other city is doing what we’re doing, and we see real results in our streets, parks, and beaches. I want to give a huge thank you to all the organizers and volunteers who have led and participated in the over 2,000 neighborhood cleanups we have now collectively organized since April of 2021. Yes, that means 5,300 new unique trash pick-up volunteers, 18,800+ hours, 5,700+ bags of trash.”
