The #TLTogether series highlights the incredible people who are part of the Tenderloin’s diverse communities—neighbors, small business owners, nonprofit workers, creatives, and more. This week, meet Tenderloin resident and Safe Passage Corner Captain Lexx Thomas.
To Lexx, the Tenderloin is home. While originally born in the Philippines, and later living in South Florida, he had set his sights on California nearly ten years ago. On arriving to San Francisco, he was faced with failing kidneys and serious health issues which led him to SF General Hospital, then to the Tenderloin. After, what Lexx describes as a “miraculous recovery”, he started working as a Safe Passage Corner Captain.
Lexx relishes in making others feel at ease with his welcoming presence. He’s pursued this gift by assisting others through part-time ministry work. As a Safe Passage Corner Captain, he particularly enjoys working with senior residents of the neighborhood. He misses the weekly walks they used to take (pre-Covid19) as part of the Safe Passage Senior program:
I loved seeing the regulars every week—their motivation and joy. After a while they started recognizing me. They appreciate my personality and just having me be there. I just love it.
When asked about the neighborhood, Lexx reflects on both the struggle and beauty that exists here:
When I walk through the Tenderloin, I see the level of disparity, and people just trying to survive however they can. But still, you can say good morning, you can say hi — and people are receptive.
Recently, Lexx participated in an eight-week mentorship program focused on personal growth through character building, humility, integrity, and honor. These are areas he wishes to continue to strengthen and traits to bring with him on his interactions, both while out on a Safe Passage in his teal vest, and to all hours in between.
Some lesser-known things about Lexx? He’s left-handed, he’s a Taurus, and also lived on a farm before making his way to the city. Be sure to say hello, if you see him in the neighborhood!
