People across the United States watched in horror last month as surveillance camera footage showed the fatal beating of motorist Tyre Nichols by a group of Memphis police officers.
Mounted on a utility pole, the camera that recorded the images was part of a broad network across the city meant to capture footage of criminal activity and transmit it back to a police command center. The network, called “SkyCop,” is monitored by police and meant to prevent violence. In this instance, it captured police engaging in violence.
