As our first ever Youth Voice intern cohort wraps up their internship with TLCBD, we’re highlighting our interns after a summer of incredible work. Next up – Xander Briere!
What is your relationship to the Tenderloin?
I grew up generationally homeless in the Tenderloin. My grandmother lived in SROs, and I grew up in the Senator Hotel, across the street from TLCBD. I’m a passionate political activist, and I frequently engage in protests, community gatherings, and volunteering in the community. I am also a proud member of the Youth Advisory Board at Larkin Street Youth Services, where I serve as their health & education liaison.
What’s something you love about the neighborhood?
I really like Boeddeker Park and how clean it is. When I was a kid, it was considered a dangerous place, and one we were supposed to avoid, but it’s really improved since then.
What’s something you would like to improve for the neighborhood?
I would really like to see safe injection sites. On the street, it’s dehumanizing to those who use, and we need more access to safe injection to keep the process discreet, and to humanize the experience for those involved.
What was your experience like interning at TLCBD?
I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve been involved in advocacy work before, but TLCBD’s work is more holistic and family oriented, and it’s been interesting to learn more about that side of advocacy in the neighborhood. I’ve also learned a lot about community leadership, budget proposals, and the impact that outreach and engagement can have on the neighborhood.
Xander is pursuing a certificate through City College of San Francisco in addiction and recovery counseling. They are also pursuing full-time work, with an interest in community engagement and political advocacy, and continuing to serve on Larkin Street Youth Services’ Youth Advisory Board.
