Pedestrian Scrambles—also known as intersections with diagonal street crossings where all the lights turn red and pedestrians can cross free of vehicular traffic—are being installed in the Tenderloin in two batches. The first round of installations is happening now and the second is expected at the end of the month and beginning of 2021.
San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) engineers are currently moving forward with the installation of diagonal signals at the intersections of Eddy/Mason, Ellis/Jones, Turk/Jones, Turk/Leavenworth, and Golden Gate/Leavenworth.

The second batch of diagonal signals will be installed and activated at the intersections of Eddy/Jones, Golden Gate/Hyde, Hyde/McAllister, Leavenworth/McAllister, and Turk/Hyde in late December or January 2021. In addition, the SFMTA is also planning to have the diagonal pavement markings painted at these pedestrian scramble intersections in 2021.
Safe Passage Safety Captains have been doing educational outreach and have been assisting people at these intersections, unfortunately, due to the latest shelter-in-place mandates we have had to make the difficult decision to pause these on-the-street outreach efforts. Stay tuned for more updates—and as always, WALK SAFE.
