Since shelter-in-place began, TLCBD has collaborated with Tenderloin organizations, the City, and other partners such as SF-Marin Food Bank to address urgent food scarcity needs. Most recently, and after much advocacy, partners in food justice were able to secure a pop-up food pantry at 357 Ellis Street every Monday. Join us in supporting this work by volunteering with us!
Food insecurity in the Tenderloin is an issue that has become even more critical during the Covid19 pandemic. Many vulnerable groups including families with children are experiencing difficulty providing and getting groceries, coupled with the closure of schools which has cut off many students from access to food they would have usually received.
Food Delivery
Since April, the Safe Passage Corner Captains have been providing on-the-ground support, delivering grocery bags to families and individuals who have registered with the Salvation Army Kroc Center. The food is from the SF Marin Food Bank and distributed through DCYF (Department of Children, Youth and Their Families).
Tenderloin’s Pop Up Food Pantry
By coordinating with a number of neighborhood organizations and City partners, a weekly pop-up food pantry has now been established at 357 Ellis Street. The pantry will operate weekly, on Mondays from 9am-1pm. The first event held on September 28th served more than 200 community members and households.
It is expected to expand in both its reach and resources to ensure accessibility and adequate service delivery, including extensive multilingual outreach and analysis to ensure needs are adequately met.
Help support this critical need by volunteering at the Tenderloin Pop-Up Food Pantry! We are currently looking for volunteers. Sign up here.
