On November 14, 2019, in connection with San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors Emergency Declaration for traffic safety, Tenderloin residents and activists – accompanied by D6 Supervisor Matt Haney – shut down the intersection of Eddy & Taylor to all vehicular traffic. The purpose of the rally was to voice public safety concerns, in the hopes that these demands will be heard, acknowledged, and acted upon by our city leaders and government agencies.
In addition to long-term street planning, Tenderloin resident leaders and activists demand that the following immediate actions be taken by our city leaders and the SFMTA:
-
Implementation of raised crosswalks at intersections near Tenderloin schools and Senior Centers. This includes the intersections at Golden Gate and Leavenworth, Golden Gate and Jones, Polk and Turk, Eddy and Jones, Eddy and Taylor, Turk and Jones, Leavenworth and Turk, Turk and Hyde, Jones and O’Farrell, O’Farrell and Taylor.
-
Red-light traffic cameras and visual radar signage must be installed at the intersections stated above in an attempt to slow drivers.
-
Increased traffic enforcement throughout the day, targeting speeders, texters, and drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians.
Endorsing Organizations included Tenderloin People’s Congress, Tenderloin Community Benefits District, Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, Tenderloin Chinese Rights Association, and Tenderloin Traffic Safety Taskforce.
