D6 Supervisor Matt Haney’s call for a task force to address harms related to open drug dealing in the Tenderloin and other neighborhoods is headed to a full vote after unanimous approval at the rules committee on September 16th. Haney read several emails from constituents expressing concern over the pervasive issue.
Among the speakers, Fernando Pujals, Director of Communications & Clean Engagement, expressed TLCBD’s strong support to Supervisor Haney’s office and other members of the Board of Supervisors for supporting the legislation. Pujals also noted during public comment that the open drug market which is concentrated in the neighborhood is not sustained by the neighborhood but by a regional demand.
The task force, which TLCBD supports as part of the Tenderloin Thrives initiative, calls for a 12-member group, public meetings, and coordinated effort on behalf of City agencies. TLCBD will continue to work with the task force, as well as community members working to bring calm to the neighborhood.
In April, Haney’s office first brought attention to the issue as part of a hearing of the Neighborhood Safety and Services Committee meeting. That meeting drew hundreds of community members. It was also at that time that Kate Robinson, TLCBD Director of Safe Programs presented to the committee. Read her full statement here.
