Welcome to a new regular column, Neighborhood Heroes. Every month we’ll share the story of a community member or members including residents, businesses, organizations, and property owners who’ve taken it upon themselves to do something to better their slice of the neighborhood.
This month, we’re sharing the story of neighbors along Turk Street, who have been spotted every weekday sweeping, cleaning and generally connecting with neighbors along the sidewalks of the 200 (and some of the 300) block of Turk Street. The daily activation is happening from 2:30-2:45pm, and follows in the footsteps of the activity dubbed TL230 by the Golden Gate Avenue Block Safety Group (started in 2015). Neighbors from the Golden Gate group even joined in with on Turk Street during the first day of activation. The Turk Street group, which recently began meeting regularly to address quality of life issues along their blocks, has also been participating in 4 Corner Fridays.
Want to participate in TL230 on your block? It’s pretty simple. Just go outside for fifteen minutes starting at 2:30pm. Many choose to clean/sweep the sidewalk or wash windows, but cleaning is not necessarily the intention or spirit of the activation, according to the founding Golden Gate Avenue Block Safety Group. It’s really about stepping out, activating the sidewalk, and connecting with neighbors.
We invite you to try it out!
Thank you to all the neighbors along Turk Street, in particular families from 201 Turk Street, Salvation Army Croc Center, Chinatown Community Development Center, and Curry Senior Center. In addition, SFPD Tenderloin Station officers have been present during the daily activation. Safe Passage, which every day provides assists hundreds of children along these very blocks, has really noticed the difference. You are neighborhood heroes!
If you’d like to get involved with efforts along Turk Street, or would like to start your own but not sure where to start, contact TLCBD and we’ll help you get going.
