Monsters, creatures, zentangles, or anything else. Pick the next knit phase of this public art project dotting the Civic Center public spaces. You have until June 30th to help them decide.
Take a stroll and check to check out Phase I. Note you can meet the artists any Tuesday In June. Be sure to stop by the new Art/Lit LIZ installation on Fulton between the Main Library and Asian Art Museum. It’s a giant dragon. You won’t miss it. There are plenty of tables and chairs to sit and chat. Did you know the dragon sculpture was made by high school students and designed mostly in a working space courtesy of Local 2 on Golden Gate Avenue?

Knitting the Commons is a temporary art project that aims to ‘knit’ together the Civic Center Commons (the Commons), the new name for Civic Center Plaza, United Nations (UN) Plaza and Fulton Street in between the Asian Art Museum and San Francisco Main Public Library.
Working closely with Civic Center stakeholders, Trust for Public Land and Knits for Life developed the large yarn tree-wrapping art installation to accomplish the goal of uniting the Commons with playful, visual elements. Knits for Life, an artist-sister-duo, is leading the design and installation with input from the community. The installation stands to remain for up to two (2) years.
The installation will arrive in the Commons in two phases:
The artists will be out in the space throughout the month of June on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to explain their process to the public and answer questions about the installation. More information on these demonstrations is available under Updates.
This project is part of the Civic Center Commons Initiative which aims to bring new experiences, workforce development and social service partnerships in an effort to unite the open spaces in the Commons. One of the goals of this Initiative is to add visual unite the three public spaces. Knitting the Commons is the first of many efforts to make this goal a reality. For more information on the Civic Center Commons Initiative, visit civiccentercommons.org
- Phase 1 will ‘knit’ the space together with brightly colored bands (yellow, red, blue – Civic Center Commons colors) on trees throughout the Commons during June 2017.
- Phase 2 will bring three clusters of themed trees to each of the three spaces. The theme will be decided by the public. Anyone can vote HERE on the theme – or in the Civic Center Commons between 8am-7pm with one of our stewards – from June 12 – June 30, 2017. Phase 2 will be installed in August 2017.
