Celebrating 36 years this month, nonprofit affordable housing developer Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation has published a free e-book TNDC at 35: A History of Affordable Homes, Advocacy, and Community in the Heart of the City.
TNDC at 35, which features interactive components including video interviews and historic photographs, not only chronicles the work of TNDC but is full of interesting Tenderloin history. It notes the unique past of many of the Tenderloin’s buildings while also telling the story of the neighborhood through the lens of its housing and activism while addressing difficult questions around development, gentrification, homelessness, social service, and more. Download a PDF, e-book, or reserve a hard copy by contacting info@tndc.org. In the introduction to this important book, TNDC Executive Director Don Falk writes, “TNDC’s history is not just about facts; it is also a story about people. Thousands have lived in TNDC’s housing and worked in our offices and buildings since 1981. This project captures their stories as well.”
If you’d like to carry on a conversation and learn more about strategies for equitable development, consider attending the Development w/o Displacement Community Workshop on June 28th from 11am to 2pm at 180 Golden Gate Avenue. This event is being organized by the Market Street for the Masses Coalition.
